Environmental issues are of great importance to every human being; this is due to the negative impact mismanagement of the environment can have on the entire society. Environmental issues primarily encompass issues such as destruction of the environment through pollution and other negative human practices. Of late, the issue of climate change has kept world leaders debating measures that could help to tackle the ever increasing rate of global warming.

However, the problem is the fact that whiles large scale factories continue to release huge quantities of green house gases into the atmosphere thereby causing the melting of ice at the north and south poles, the people in authority continue to engage in verbal rhetoric.

Air Pollution

Air pollution is the major contributor of green house gases to the atmosphere. Through human activities, gases like carbon monoxide and sulphur dioxide which are produced as a result are released. The major contributor of these poisonous gases has been figured to be motor vehicles. Attempts at developing cost effective and efficient engines which will cut down on the release of harmful gases into the atmosphere are making giant strides. Unfortunately, the number of motor vehicles which are actively releasing toxic fumes does not seem to have any potential of going down.

Air pollution as an environmental issue is a major challenge not just because of its effect on the atmosphere, but also its role in exposing humans and other organisms to harmful pollutants that can lead to disease condition and possibly death. Some of the possible diseases that can be attributed to air pollutants are asthma, cancer, respiratory tract infections, immune diseases, cardiovascular diseases, throat inflammation and many others.

Water and Land Pollution

On the other hand when harmful contaminants are released into water bodies, environmentalists have course to worry. For example, when untreated sewage is released into water bodies, a serious environmental issue may arise. There could be destruction of aquatic habitats leading to the death of several hundreds of aquatic animals. Water pollution stretches far beyond the problems associated with sewage. Waste from factories as well as accidental discharge of petroleum and petroleum products into water bodies also play a vital role in threatening the habitat of aquatic lives. Additionally, water pollution as an environmental issue can drastically reduce the world’s fresh water supply. Another major type of pollution occurs when harmful pollutants find their way onto the land. In this case, environmentalists will term it as land pollution. Just like water and air pollution, land pollution causes serious harm to humans and their environment.

In summary, when any environmentalist is to give a list of common environmental issues that are of great concern to humanity, the person is likely to put climate change at the top of the list. Next on the list should be conservation. The topic of conservation should include how to protect the land, water bodies and atmosphere against the harmful aspects of human activity. The process of conserving the environment is a collective one that requires that we all join hands in order to achieve a great deal of success. Those in authority have to take decisive actions in implementing the appropriate policies to protect the environment.
